I've been working with nonprofit organizations since 1997. My practice is centered around advising nonprofits on tax matters, helping them apply for tax-exempt status, and preparing Form 990, 990-EZ, and 990-PF.
I work with nonprofits all over the United States. I also have many years of experience in helping nonprofits of all kinds get relief from IRS penalties and in helping revoked organizations have their exempt status reinstated.
I hold a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration/Accounting from the University of South Florida and took many post-graduate courses in taxation. I studied tax under Dr. Cherie J. O'Neil, who was the first Quinn Professor of Taxation at USF, and I studied auditing under Dr. Gary Holstrum.
I have been a Certified Public Accountant licensed in Florida since 1998. Florida CPA License #AC0031324.
I began working with nonprofits in 1997 in St. Petersburg, Florida when I took my first accounting job with Fraser and Company in downtown St. Petersburg, where I worked for seven years. I prepared Form 990 for more than 50 local nonprofit organizations with annual revenues ranging from $25,000 to $17,000,000. After seven years, Fraser sold his practice to Cherry, Bekaert & Holland, where I worked for two years before going out on my own.
Today I generally work with small and medium-sized nonprofits. I don't perform attest work (reviews and audits). A nonprofit with revenues between $50,000 and $1,000,000 in annual revenue would be the typical range I work with. I have no problem working with larger organizations, but I find that most of the larger organizations need audits and the audit firm typically handles the Form 990 preparation.
Examples of organizations I work with include: Booster organizations, adoption services, theaters, educational organizations of all types, cultural or religious organizations, neighborhood associations, private foundations, amateur sports, animal rescue, various types of social or recreational clubs, environmental and conservation organizations, patriot organizations, veterans organizations, organizations that serve the homeless and needy.
